The Somali Bantu Community Association of Onondaga County, Inc. (“the Association”) began in October 2004 and received its 501(c)3 status in June of 2008. The mission of the Association is to promote Bantu cultural programs and assist community members in attaining the necessary skills, language competencies, and resources to overcome poverty and become functioning members of society. The Association’s key program, the Somali-Bantu Community Tutoring Programme, is a community-based literacy effort, and it serves youth and adults alike. In addition, the Association provides voluntary assistance with employment searches, interpretation and translation services, advocacy, and transportation to medical and social services appointments. Annually, the Association serves 95 families, with more than 500 individuals; of these, approximately 285 are children under 18 years of age. Almost all of these individuals are refugees who have come to America to escape persecution. Many come with nothing more than their families and dreams of a better life. The community believes in working hard to help one another move ahead and we have developed partnerships with several organizations, including Catholic Charities, which helps to connect us to other organizations and contributes supplies to our programs; and Interfaith works of CNY, which offer short-term assistance with refugee resettlement.
